5 day-plan(s) · Aligned to Ministry of Education (Jamaica) Mathematics Scope & Sequence Grades 1-3 / NSC

Day 1: The undo machine: inverse operations

Grade 1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 12 · 60 minutes
ObjectivesStudents will be able to: (1) demonstrate that addition and subtraction undo each other; (2) use the inverse to CHECK answers; (3) complete do-undo chains.
MaterialsCounters; the fact-family houses from Week 10; a decorated "undo machine" box (in: 5, +3, out: 8... feed the 8 back with -3!); whiteboards.
Key vocabularyinverse, undo, check, opposite, do and undo
Engage (starter)(10 min) The magic undo box: feed in 5 counters, the machine adds 3... out come 8! "Can we get our 5 BACK?" Feed the 8 in, machine subtracts 3... FIVE returns! Addition done; subtraction UNDOES.
Develop (main)(35 min) 1. Machine rounds with children as operators: do-undo chains acted with counters (start, +4, -4, home again — every time!). 2. The checking superpower unveiled: solved 9 - 6 = 3? UNDO it: 3 + 6 should rebuild 9... it does — answer CONFIRMED without asking teacher! Practise checking four given answers (one is planted wrong; the undo exposes it). 3. Pairs write two do-undo chains of their own and verify. 4. Formal connection: this is why fact families hold four facts — the family IS the machine's blueprint.
Plenary (close)(10 min) The self-checking pledge (playful but real): "Before I ask 'is it right?', I UNDO and see." Three volunteer demonstrations seal it.
AssessmentChain sheets: two chains correct; the planted error caught by undoing; checking used unprompted at least once during the lesson.
Teacher notesSelf-checking via inverse is the single most empowering habit this term can gift — it converts the teacher from answer-oracle to coach. Expect to re-plant the habit weekly; it takes months to root.

Day 2: The number line grand tour

Grade 1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 12 · 60 minutes
ObjectivesStudents will be able to: (1) add and subtract on the number line with hops; (2) sequence numbers to 100 and separate a set into 3 groups; (3) unite the term's number skills on one model.
MaterialsFloor and personal number lines (0-20); hundred chart; counters; three plates; gap-sequence strips to 100.
Key vocabularynumber line, hop forward, hop back, sequence, groups
Engage (starter)(10 min) The line's greatest hits: hop +1 (September's one-more!), hop -2 (count back!), leap by 2s (the pairs parade!) — one model, all year's moves. Today it hosts everything.
Develop (main)(35 min) 1. Mixed-operation line work: 6 + 3 hopped forward, 9 - 4 hopped back, each written as its sentence — six problems alternating operations. 2. Sequence station: strips into the high decades (67, 68, _, 70; 98, 99, _) — the summit crossed again with confidence. 3. Three-plate partition: a set of 9 separated into 3 equal groups (deal-around from halving, extended — and Grade 2's division waves from the horizon). Try 12 into 3. 4. Line stories: "The frog stands on 8, hops back 3, then forward 2 — where now?" Multi-hop journeys as the ultimate integration.
Plenary (close)(10 min) Human line finale: children AS the numbers 0-12; a volunteer "frog" walks a called journey; the line itself verifies every landing.
AssessmentLine work: 5 of 6 mixed operations correct with hops; one high-decade strip; 9 into 3 groups dealt correctly; a two-hop journey followed.
Teacher notesThe number line is the model that scales to negative numbers, fractions and beyond — fluency on it now is a decade-long investment. Multi-hop stories are early two-step problems in play clothes.

Day 3: Synthesis stations: liquids, data and conclusions

Grade 1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 12 · 60 minutes
ObjectivesStudents will be able to: (1) apply estimation to liquid quantities; (2) draw and defend conclusions from collected data; (3) integrate the term's measurement and data strands.
MaterialsWater station (final voyage); assorted containers; a fresh class survey question; the term's data tables gallery; conclusion sentence frames.
Key vocabularyconclusion, evidence, estimate, because
Engage (starter)(10 min) The term's data gallery walk: the fruit survey, the shape tally, the expedition table, the button classifications — "look how much our class has ASKED and ANSWERED." Today we squeeze the last conclusions from our evidence.
Develop (main)(35 min) 1. Liquid estimation finale: order three containers by capacity BY EYE, then verify by pouring — the term's estimate-then-check ritual performed one last time with ceremony. 2. Fresh mini-survey collected and counted in record time (the machinery is oiled now). 3. Conclusion workshop: from the fresh data, each pair drafts one conclusion with EVIDENCE using the frame: "We conclude ___ BECAUSE the data shows ___." 4. Conclusion court: pairs present; the class checks each claim against the numbers — sustained or overruled!
Plenary (close)(10 min) The scientist's bow: "You collected, sorted, classified, counted, compared and CONCLUDED. That is data science, Grade 1 edition — complete."
AssessmentConclusion drafts: claim matches data; "because" evidence cited; capacity ordering correct after one revision at most.
Teacher notesThe because-frame is the difference between opinion and inference — insist on it gently. Tomorrow is revision; keep today joyful and cumulative, the term's ideas holding hands.

Day 4: Term 2 revision carnival

Grade 1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 12 · 60 minutes
ObjectivesStudents will be able to: (1) revise the term's full skill set through mixed game stations; (2) self-nominate final practice needs before the checkpoint.
MaterialsEvery kit of the term: bundles, charts, clocks, coins, fraction folds, metre sticks, triangle cards, story doors, fact triangles; carnival music; treasure maps (tick sheets).
Key vocabularyAll Term 2 vocabulary
Engage (starter)(10 min) Carnival opening: the term's artefacts paraded — a bundle! a coin! a folded quarter! a metre stick! — each greeted by its skill shouted from the floor. Maps distributed; the treasure chest waits.
Develop (main)(35 min) Eight carnival stations, teams roaming free, teacher supporting strategically: 1 - Bundle and read a 2-digit number; one digit interview. 2 - Set a clock to half past. 3 - Pay for a $17 item at the express stall. 4 - Halve AND quarter a set of 8. 5 - Estimate a length to the half metre. 6 - Sort four stories to the plus/minus doors. 7 - Recite one fact family; undo-check one answer. 8 - Even/odd sort five cards; name a triangle in any orientation.
Plenary (close)(10 min) Map completion ceremony — then the honest whisper from Week 12 Term 1 returns: "Which station needs one more practice before Thursday?" Self-nominations recorded with respect.
AssessmentTeam maps plus self-nominations collected — tomorrow's support groups are built tonight from the children's own honest requests.
Teacher notesThe carnival IS the revision — no worksheets required. Trust the format proven in Term 1: heard children walk into assessment calm.

Day 5: Term 2 checkpoint and celebration

Grade 1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 12 · 60 minutes
ObjectivesStudents will be able to: (1) demonstrate the term's learning in a calm individual checkpoint; (2) celebrate a term of enormous mathematical growth.
MaterialsIndividual checkpoint sheets (12 items spanning the term); the Week 9/10 fact-sample station; nominated-practice warm-up huddle; certificates; the September sorting trays for the finale.
Key vocabularyAll Term 2 vocabulary
Engage (starter)(10 min) Nominated warm-up huddles run first (yesterday's requests honoured); the rest review personal fact cards in calm. The showing-day breath taken together: "Show what you know, and it is enough."
Develop (main)(35 min) 1. Checkpoint carousel (25 min, calm room): the 12-item sheet — bundle-and-write, one digit interview, clock time, coin total, half of a set, quarter of a shape, one metre estimate, plus/minus story choice, two mixed facts, one fact family, even/odd sort, one data reading. Teacher side-table: individual addition AND subtraction re-samples /10 (the term's headline data). 2. Early finishers decorate Term 2 certificates.
Plenary (close)(10 min) CELEBRATION: certificates with each child's proudest "I can" read aloud. The January straw bundles make the guest appearance this time — "from bundling tens to undoing operations in ONE term." Applause, and the holiday family-games note goes home.
AssessmentTerm 2 record per child: 12-item score; addition and subtraction samples /10 (compare Week 10 T1 and Week 9 T2); carnival map; strand observations. The complete picture feeds Term 2 reports and Term 3 groupings.
Teacher notesTerm 2 is Grade 1's mountain — place value, money, fractions, both operations, standard units — and your class just climbed it. Term 3 (money problems, solids, algebra's first whisper, graphs) is the victory lap with three new views. Rest well; the plans are ready when you are.
